Beginner Bike?
I am looking to buy my first motorcycle. I have never even drove a bike before, but know I want that “crotch-rocket” look. Can you tell me what bike would be good for me? I’d like to stay under $4,000. Some people say 600cc’s is too much for a beginner, but a 250 wouldn’t be powerful enough on the highway (which I would like to drive on from time to time). Here are two that I found…

You want to stay away from ‘pure’ sportbikes–GSX-R, CBR, R-6, etc. They are serious machines, very single-purpose, not easy to learn on, plus if you drop one it can be $1500 for new plastic!
The GS-500 is a great choice. Not too big or hard to handle, but zippy enough performance and ’sporty’ looks, and it corners more than good enough. 600ccs is not too big for a first bike, in fact today we consider that ‘medium sized’.
There are a lot of ’sporty’ bikes that look cool and are very fun to ride but that aren’t real ‘racing’ sportbikes. The Kawasaki Ninja line (various sizes) are like this. The Honda 599 (aka ‘Hornet’) is a wonderful little bike. These bikes are very general purpose, good for transportation -and- fun.
I would not buy anything too shiny and new. You’re going to be hard on your first bike. You’re going to abuse the clutch. You might drop it once or twice before you get the hang of it. You should buy something older, 5-10 years old, maybe even with a few bruises already on it. In a year you can sell it for about what you paid for it, and by then you’ll have a better idea of what you really want.
Also, think SAFETY! The MSF course is well worth the cost. Half of all motorcycle accidents happen to riders in their first year, so get through that year alive and you’re already twice as safe! Be sure to reserve money in your budget for helmet, jacket, and gloves at least. Boots might be nice too.
