Aftermarket Motorcycle Exhaust Systems
How to start my own business?
I’m really into motorcycles and I want to start my own business for making aftermarket parts. Parts I have in mind are exhaust systems and suspension components and ignition systems. I already came up with the name. I don’t want to share it, because someone might steal it. One BIG problem is I’m 15, but it’s my dream to start my own business and work to making quality parts for motorcycles and motocross bikes.
Anything else I can do to help start getting somewhere with my business than just having the name and motto? I know how to use AutoCAD and I own a copy of it, so I plan on doing a lot of my drawings there of my parts. I’m currently looking for a minimum wage job to help me raise money to buy a new welder, metal lathe and I wish, a cnc mill.
I was already thinking of drawing up my company’s logo, then I make a couple of my products, throw them on a few of my buddies bikes, and people will start to notice my company a little and it would continue to grow from there.
I am 20 and I started my own business this spring. It is a lot of hard work but if your doing something you love it is worth it. Cost is definitely your biggest barrier right now, so you’re best bet would probably be to hit up family for “investments”
Do you currently know how to fabricate from metal? If not, definitely see about taking some classes at your local vo-tech. Usually they let high school students take classes for half a day and it could help build your resume and your skills to have practice like that.
Something you might consider that no one wants to think about, is taking your ideas to an established company. Apply for employment and offer suggestions, if your parts or processes are innovative (I e no one else in the industry uses them) you might have a difficult time pitching the idea, but you want to be able to present your idea professionally, you want them to believe that you know beyond a shadow of a doubt that your method is the best.
My advice, start small, tinker around and try to build your parts from your garage. Take some classes and learn all you can about the industry. SAVE any money you can, because starting a business is expensive. And try to recruit friends and family into the venture, if you have a good support network, who believe in you and your abilities, you have a much better chance to succeed.
