california 50cc scooter laws?

a 50cc scooter the kind that you sit on and seats 2 goes about 40 mph does it need to be registered in ca and have insurance on it? do i need a motorcycle class license to drive it? or anything else i should know about driving it in california? riverside county.

In California a sit down type motor scooter is legally a motorcycle. If it is under 150cc is it a motor-driven cycle. Either way, it is a motor vehicle and requires registration and insurance. To ride a 2-wheel motorcycle, including a motor-driven cycle, you need an M1 endorsement (motorcycle license.) (An M2 is for a moped, a sit down type with pedals as well as an engine.) (Only way to avoid having to have a motorcycle license is to have three wheels as in a sidecar attached — remember the Govenator’s crash a few years back?)

For what it’s worth I would not ride a 50cc scooter in California. 40 mph is not enough to keep up with speed of traffic and I will not be one of those snails clogging the road. You have to have the same licensing for a 150cc so you might as well get one.

Don’t listen to those out of state idiots that do not know our Vehicle Code (link below)
