Digital Motorcycle Tachometer
I have an American Ironhorse Motorcycle with a digital speedometer. It only works in the dark. Any Suggestions?
My digital Speedo has a day/night sensor that changes the brightness depending on surrounding light. Unfortunately when the surrounding environment is light (daytime) the speedo doesn’t work at all. If I leave my garage at 15MPH and enter sunlight, the speedo sticks at 15MPH until I shut down the bike. The tachometer also freezes.
The speedo works perfectly in low light.
How can I address this or is it possible to cover the light sensor? If so, where is the light sensor on the unit? (i have the crescent shaped stainless speedo.
It has been a while since I have done anything with an AIH speedo, I can’t remember exactly where the sensor is on the speedo (some of the older units had the sensor on the underside of the speedo, just under the face, if you have this, try to cover it with electrical tape and see what happens. If I remember correctly, the circuitry on the speedo head is a sealed unit, meaning it is almost impossible to access the actual speedo face circuit board without destroying the unit, this is where the sensor is on the newer units. I am not sure if this will work due to light coming in from the surrounding area, but when in the light, try using your thumb to cover different areas of the face, if the lights come back on, cover that area with electrical tape and hope for the best.
It is possible to change the speedo to a Dakota Digital, but it will require replacing the bars, risers and iginition system….as AIH in their infinite idiocy, made their speedo/tach units work ONLY with with their proprietary GIL Ignitions and will ONLY mount to their handlebar set-up. The ONLY ignition system that will work with AIH wiring is a specailly made Daytona Twin Tech TC-88 module made specifically as AIH/GIL replacement.
Obviously, Joseph, below doesn’t know ANYTHING about your bike!!!…..i never said the speedo was POWERED by the ignition circuit……The tach is INTEGRATED into the speedo unit, along with all the indicator lights……all ONE UNIT…..the tach only works with AIH Ign System or a Daytona Twin Tec Ign!!!!…..this….is why I stated the info above!!!!
