What kind of bike do you need to pass the motorcycle skills test in CA?
I am getting a Yamaha Vino 125cc scooter, and I need to get my M2 class license. The guy at the dealership said that I would need to take the motorcycle skills test at the DMV on a 250cc or higher bike. Then again, he also suggested that the cops are not going to bother me if I don’t have a license for the scooter. Is he right?
In CA, a scooter sized 150cc or larger will qualify for a M1 motorcycle license which allows you to operate larger bikes (outside of the category of scooter) such as Harleys, GoldWings, etc.
So, purchase your Vino at this time knowing that it’s not freeway legal while you still need to pass the written and riding motorcycle test(s) for a special scooter license only — not necessarily a full-fledgd motorcycle license.
