Most people will need to look at the size that they just measured and move up to the next closest size; for example if you measure a 46 inch chest you would fall into the Large size bracket but may be snug so rounding up to the next even number (48) then an Extra Large may be more accommodating and comfortable.
As mentioned before, thickness of the leather is important for safety and protection as thicker is better but too thick is uncomfortable. The optimal thickness for a riding jacket should be 1.2mm to 1.4mm thick, yet 1.4mm to 1.6mm may be helpful in colder climates.
